Expat Sat: Alex From Australia

August 22, 2009

When did you move to the UK and why?

In 2007 to South London, for … love, well it certainly wasn’t for money, London has bled me dry.

What was your first weird experience?

Opening a newspaper on the tube and seeing boobs. What the hell? You English people are the most sexually inhibited people, and yet you’re home of the page 3 girls. Australia might have the sun but England has The Sun!
What do you miss the most about home?

Schooners- the perfect size beer, not too big, not too small. Oh and cheap Thai food, oh my god, I can get a meal in Sydney cheaper than a bowl of boiled rice in London.

You’re big on shopping. How does it compare?

Believe it or not, groceries are so better and cheaper in the UK. Tesco for it’s 2 for 1 deals and Iceland for its frozen food for a pound goodness. Oh you mean fashion? Well I have to say, Top Shop in the West End is my heaven.

How do you find the night life?

There’s something for everyone, every night of the week, where as in Sydney you gotta plan and wait weeks for a good night out. The nightlife is definitely one of the best things about the UK.

Who are your fave English bands/ writers?

Zadie Smith, Jeanette Winterson, Oscar Wilde although he’s Irish isnt he? but you guys claimed him, much the same way we claimed Russel Crowe. Bands: too many to list really, The Cure right through to the Streets to The Kooks.

Which B grade British celebrity do you love to hate?

I hate to admit it but Peter and Jordan fascinate me and for all the wrong reasons.

What do you read on the tube?

People, the label on my cider and The Metro of course.

Finish these sentences:

The best things about the UK are … roasts, Easyjet cheap flights to Europe, the best music festivals n the world.
The best thing to come out of England is…. Australians.
The next prime minister of England should be… Russel Brand, he’d be like the British Bill Clinton… as in he’s very charismatic.
Boris Johnson is … in need of a haircut or a David Beckham head-band.

lol, I could never figure out the charms of Russell Brand. Fine, I am a guy but still there should be some sort of universally accepted form of charm, no? To me, he is a grizzly guy whom gals throw themselves at. Gawd, I’ll kill to be him. :p
