The Sun

November 24, 2009

Sorry Martin but The Sun is weird. Here are some facts about the tabloid that I find surprising:

* It is extremely popular (with the second highest circulation of any daily English-language newspaper in the world and the biggest circulation within the UK).

* Has featured a topless model on page 3 since 1970.

* It is written by journalists who, for the most part, studied at Oxford or Cambridge university.

* It regularly wins British Press Awards.

* 44% of readers are female.

I see people reading The Sun on the way to work and wonder – why? My only rational answer is that people are reading it as an alternative to a trash mag like Hello. With The Sun you get your fix of celebrity gossip and ridiculous headlines plus a distorted overview of the latest headlines that make the complicated and detailed reporting of The Guardian and the BBC easier to understand.

Even more worrying – it’s owned by a (previous) Australian: our very own Rupert Murdoch. Chilling ain’t it.

Note that in the nineties they had a campaign to not have false breasts on Page 3. When Katie Price was a popular Page 3 girl, pre-surgery and known as Jordan they had a poll on whether she should have a boob job – the readers voted NO.

I went to get a copy when the price first drop to 20p. Hmmm… it’s an… interesting read – lots of pictures, very little words. Was dazzled by the splash of pictures across the pages, gave me a headache thereafter.

The page 3 gal was oh well… the Sun didn’t even last me a 5 station tube ride. Never again.
